Here at Grahame Gardner we are constantly innovating to ensure we bring the latest uniform designs, styles and fabrics to market. Over recent years, it’s safe to say that the technology behind the different fabric options has come on leaps and bounds but that can often leave consumers bamboozled as to what elements will work best for them – particularly when considering workwear. So, to make it all as simple as possible, we’ve broken the process down and produced a simple guide that highlights the benefits our various fabrics bring and what you need to look out for in your workwear to make sure you get what you need!

Fade Resistant and Wrinkle Free

If your priority is to make sure you have a uniform that works as hard as you and looks just like new however long you’ve had it, then keep an eye out for items made from 73% Polyester/25% Rayon/2% Spandex.

Rayon is derived from bamboo and is much more moisture absorbent than cotton – it’s also soft and comfortable to wear.

Our Proflex Scrub range by Landau is a great example of this fabric mix which resists wrinkles, fading and sagging. The comfort of two-way stretch twill fabric keeps you looking tailored and professional all day long. The particular range boasts athletic inspired styling, keeps its colour and doesn’t fade providing a fresh-looking uniform after every wash. There’s also no need to iron or worry about looking unprofessional with lots of wrinkles and creases.

We advise to wash this material at a maximum of 40⁰ C. For suitable infection control at below 60C and to comply with the NHS guidelines you can use a laundry cleanser (we recommend Dettol Anti-Bacterial Laundry Cleanser) in each wash, ensuring your scrubs are thoroughly clean.

Cooling and Moisture Wicking properties

When rushed off your feel all day, or night, a lightweight, quick drying uniform that has clear cooling benefits can be absolutely essential. If that resonates with you, then look for fabrics which contain Polyester or Polycotton.

Polyester wicks moisture away from the body, resists pilling and is also quick drying too. Polycotton is a fabric made from a blend of natural cotton and synthetic polyester fibres, designed to give the advantages of both cotton and polyester in one fabric such as hypoallergenic, softness and breathability. It’s most definitely two for the price of one on that front!

We recommend our Urbane Essentials Range that is made from a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Not only is this range breathable, but it’s also wrinkle and fade resistant, too!

If you want some added stretch alongside moisture management properties, then the Urbane Quick Cool range is a win, win as the material boasts 95% polyester and 5% spandex , so not only do strategically placed mesh panels help you stay cool and fresh all day long, , it also has Spandex for added stretch and comfort.

High Wash Temperature

Infection control has always been extremely important, but it is particularly relevant at the moment as we all adapt to the changes the coronavirus pandemic has brought.

Many customers tell us that being able to wash their workwear at 60⁰ C is vital to them in which case you should be looking for fabrics that are 50% Polyester/50% Cotton such as our standout Unisex TS2020 reversible scrub suit.

This durable fabric is easy to wash and care for and is far less likely to fade, shrink or lose its shape than when compared to 100% cotton. It’s also great for active job roles and Polyester has moisture wicking properties meaning that it will dry faster too.

However, it is really important to note that this material can also be washed at 40⁰ C and still comply with NHS guidelines, advice from other professional bodies and infection controls procedures. Just make sure you also use a laundry cleanser, an antibacterial agent capable of killing 99.9% of bacteria even at 20⁰C. This method suits customers who are concerned about the environmental impact of washing at 60⁰ C and also ensures the longevity of your workwear as washing at a lower temperature means there is less fabric degradation.

Movability & Stretch

If you feel restricted and uncomfortable in your workwear, then a fabric that contains spandex is what you’re after –a blend that has just a hint such as 97% Polyester/3% spandex will do the job.

Spandex adds flexibility, so you can move and stretch easily without being restricted. It also expands and stretches with movement while remaining strong and will return to its original shape after stretching. In addition, spandex is really quick drying and when mixed with cotton or polyester, the elastane provides additional ‘stretchiness’ without sacrificing the look and comfort of the fabric. We recommend washing this fabric at 40⁰ C, again with a cleanser such as Dettol Laundry Cleanser.

Our Urbane Align Range features this four-way stretch fabric with slim-profile sport detailing. The contemporary, figure hugging styling delivers a sleek profile without sacrificing all-day comfort.

Another helpful tip is to look for items that include side vents or panels for even more freedom of movement such as this zip front tunic.
